Charlie's Fifteen Year Anniversary Playlist (for 12/26/2009)
CHARLIE'S FIFTEEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BROADCASTING LOCAL MUSIC ON KOOP 91.7 FM
On December 23, 1994, during KOOP Radio's first week on the air, two tenderfoot radio deejays launched KOOP's only all local music show, The Austin Music Tour, which ran for one or two years before I replaced it with Around the Town Sounds, a similarly packaged show, but designed to be run by a collective of individuals rather than only one or two hosts.
I went by Charles rather than Charlie on The Austin Music Tour in order to avoid confusion with my cohost Charlie Caldwell, even though he was known to the listening public by his pseudonym Dee Stallings. I tackled the first set, a Christmas and Jesus-themed collection of tunes, mostly in the Americana mode, and Dee followed with another set of mostly Americana tunes, although some glossy pop rock from Eric Johnson began his set.
Today's show begins with three tunes from those first two sets from just over fifteen years ago. The first song, from an offshoot of the Butthole Surfers, is decidedly not in the Americana vein, and when first aired on The Austin Music Tour it demonstrated our intention to showcase all genres of Austin music from the most traditional styles to the most avant-garde, unlike other local music shows of the day which tended to be either all mainstream rock or all Americana (country, folk, blues, r&b, roots rock, or combinations of these). This eclecticism has remained a key ingredient in the continuum from The Austin Music Tour through Around the Town Sounds, and with this focus I sincerely hope we've kept you well-informed and entertained these many years.
