Remi Alvarez was born in and resides in Mexico City. He studied flute at the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica and is self-taught on the saxophone. He has studied with Don Cherry, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, George Lewis and Evan Parker. He plays in a variety of different musical contexts that include jazz, new music, electro-acoustic, and pure improvisation. He has toured Europe on at least two occasions and has also played in New York at the Vision Festival.
Some of the recordings featured in this program have not been commercially issued, and were provided by and played with the permission of the artist. My interview with Remi Alvarez was recorded immediately before his concert in Austin this past January. (He played in a trio with Ingebrigt Haaker-Flaten and Stefan Gonzalez.)

Alex Coke was in the studio for a tribute to the saxophonist, bandleader and composer Willem Breuker, who passed away last week in Amsterdam. Breuker was an important figure on the European music scene for more than 40 years. In the mid-1960s, he co-founded the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) with Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg, as well as performing with the Globe Unity Orchestra and Gunter Hampel. But he is better known for leading his Kollektief, a band he created in 1974. He established the record label, BVHaast, in the same year.
Alex Coke played with the Willem Breuker Kollektief for nearly a decade.
