Under the X in Texas
TUESDAY'S , 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. HOST: TED BRANSON

Program description:
Supporting KOOP's mission, Under the X in Texas seeks out the senior and largely forgotten originators and forerunners of Texas music, brings to light obscure--yet influential artists in the development and history of what we've come to know as Texas Music-a rich melting pot of all cultures, women and men, coming together in the Lone Star State from the early pioneers and immigrants bringing with them the musics of their homelands, creating a rich musical heritage that includes Blues, Jazz, Conjunto, Cowboy Poets, Singer Songwriters, Country Western, Rockabilly, Western Swing, R & B, Tex-Mex, German /Czech music, Zydeco, Bluegrass and so on.

The program will also feature Texas musicians , authors, biographers , artists and filmakers who are influenced today by the musical legacy created by those who came before, with interviews–plus live performances both in studio and from the field while attending annual festival events–throughout the southwest.

Texas Music, and in particular its history, is underserved in the mainstream media. Continuing with KOOP's mission to serve the community, Under the X in Texas will help inform and educate listeners as to the diversity of genres created–and still very much active today here Deep in the Heart and Under the X!

JOHNNY GIMBLE WROTE OUR THEME SONG AND WHEN I ASKED HIM FOR PERMISSION TO TITLE THE PROGRAM AFTER HIS SONG HE ASKED, "WHAT STATION ARE YOU WITH?" I REPLIED, "KOOP!" HIS RESPONSE WAS SIMPLY, "I'D BE HONORED". Thank You, Johnny!

TED IS KOOP's APRIL 2012 VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH!

We love the passion that many of our KOOP volunteers display and there aren’t many more passionate and committed volunteers than our April Volunteer of the Month, “Texas Ted” Branson. Not only is Ted one of our most mustachioed programmers, he is one of the most dedicated. Ted’s show, Under the X in Texas, has been an important part of KOOP’s lineup for the past four years. The show highlights the very beginning of Texas’ rich musical culture and is part of our Roots music programs. If you want to know about Conjunto, Cowboy Poets, Rockabilly, Western Swing, Tex-Mex, German /Czech Polkas , Jazz, Blues, C&W, or Bluegrass tune in to 91.7FM every Tuesday at 9am and you will be educated and entertained… YEE HA!

Ted grew up on the rough and tumble South Side of Chicago, but moved to his CURRENT home town of Austin in 1974, where he discovered that he is a true Texan through and through. He loves the culture and history of Texas (and the USA) so much that he owns and runs an antique store called Out of the Past Collectibles – you can go and get lost in the aisles of memorabilia.

Ted has been an active KOOP volunteer for the past six years where he has done so many things including aiding other programmers by giving his insight and expertise in is well thought out peer reviews – this keeps our programming fresh . He loves helping out by engineering live music for his show and others in KOOP’s state ‘o the art studio. And you cannot have a better ally during our semiannual membership drive where Ted is the best gosh darn food wrangler you have ever seen. And everyone at the staion really appreciate his hard work.

We were concerned about him a while back as he underwent a liver transplant… but that is all behind him now as the procedure was very successful and he has recovered well and continues to get better. Here’s a fun fact about Ted… he was given the moniker of “Texas Ted” by 97 year old Johnny Cuviello who was Bob Wills’ drummer. Johnny told Ted “Stick with that title and you will be successful on the radio.” How true, Johnny. How true.(Author Lisa Scheps and Host of KOOP's Off Stage & On the Air)
