FAQs - Community and Membership
How can my business help support KOOP and earn the undying gratitude of all our loyal listeners?
KOOP welcomes participation in our station from our business partners, especially when that participation involves a donation!
The local business supporters of KOOP recognize that supporting independent public radio in Austin is the best way to get the word out about their services. KOOP's Development Director can help you today to customize an underwriting package to meet your long- or short-term businesses needs. By underwriting on KOOP you'll be able to reach a smart, progressive crowd that already has a stake in their community. You may support an individual program (check out our eclectic mix on our Schedule Page) or establish a random rotation schedule for maximum exposure. Contact our Development Director at [email protected] or 512-472-1369 today to talk about supporting KOOP!
I’m a band. How can I get my CD played on KOOP?
The KOOP Music Library always welcomes donated CDs, which are reviewed by our volunteers in the order in which they are received and then filed in the Library for use by all KOOP programmers. You may send your band’s CD to:
KOOP Music Library
3823 Airport Blvd., Suite B
Austin, TX 78722
In addition, you may wish to find a show on KOOP that would be likely to play your type of music, and contact the programmer of that show directly. You can find our full schedule on our Schedule Page; click on the title of any show to find a description and contact information for the programmer. You can also write to any program care of the address above or [email protected]; just make sure the letter or email is addressed to the specific show you’re trying to reach.
Note: KOOP is particularly interested in playing Austin-related musicians. If your recording features one or more musicians who live (or have lived) in the Austin area, or recordings featuring compositions written or co-written by those who live or have lived in the Austin area. (If the Austin connection may be obscure, please make it clear to us!) We're open to all genres (and we mean it) and several formats such as vinyl, CD, CD-R, and CD-RW. Address your CD to Around the Town Sounds at the address above, or email [email protected] with an attachment of any digital format that we can convert to CD format in Windows Media Player, or email a link to such a downloadable format.
How can my non-profit community organization partner with KOOP?
KOOP Community Radio is always seeking to connect with other community organizations in Austin. Our Community Council is charged with outreach and networking with the greater Austin community, and would be thrilled to hear from any community organizations interested in partnering or networking with KOOP. The Community Council may be reached by email at [email protected].
I’d like to give KOOP some tickets to give away on the air. Who do I contact?
You may donate tickets to KOOP by contacting [email protected]. Please note that donating tickets does not guarantee they will be given away; it is up to each DJ’s individual discretion whether to give away tickets on their show. Consider finding a show on the KOOP Schedule that plays similar music and contacting the programmer directly to increase your chances of a giveaway.
How can I get a PSA for my community organization played on KOOP?
KOOP is delighted to consider playing Public Service Announcements for worthy community and/or local non-profit organizations. Contact our Development Director at [email protected] for details.
How do I submit a CD to the KOOP Music Library?
We prefer CD submissions (rather than MP3s) which can be mailed to the KOOP mailing address ATTN: Music Director.
*Austin musicians should read this submission information. Before sending a CD, please consider the following:
As you can imagine, we receive many more CDs than we can listen to, so we prioritize them according to how well they might fit one of our current shows. However, each programmer decides what to play on their show. If we review a CD and like it, then it will be added to our library, which means it's available for airplay but not guaranteed to receive it.
Each show on the KOOP schedule has a link to a description page that explains its format. If you want to address your CD to a particular show, include its name in the address above in place of "Music Director." Also, our station's mission is to serve communities and listeners not already being served by mainstream media, so anything not addressed to a particular show that looks or smells like everyday alternative rock, singer/songwriter fare, etc. goes to the bottom of the stack.
If you decide to send a CD, please include with it a one-page overview about the band and the type of music it plays. Please do not send band photos, buttons or other gew-gaws, posters, pocket folders, etc. – they automatically go in the trash or recycling.
We also don't generally respond to individual questions about the status of a particular CD, but you can check the contents of our library at any time to see if your CD has been added. Also, most programmers post their playlists in the show blogs. We also post many reviews of CDs added to the library. So there are ways to see if your CD has been added, is getting airplay, and generally how it has been received.
How does an Austin musician submit their music to KOOP?
We're interested in recordings that feature one or more musicians who live (or have lived) in the Austin area, or recordings featuring compositions written or co-written by those who live or have lived in the Austin area. (If the Austin connection may be obscure, please make it clear to us!)
We're open to all genres (and we mean it) and several formats such as vinyl, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, keeping in mind that not all CD-Rs and CD-RWs play in all CD players. We don't have a mini-disc player at our new studio, and cassettes can be played but are discouraged so that we can leave the cassette player free for recording. If you absolutely can't get us hard copies of recordings, you can email me at [email protected] with an attachment of any digital format that we can convert to CD format in Windows Media Player, or you can email me a link to such a downloadable format.
It is recommended you provide at least two copies of your recording so that we have a copy available for anyone who wants to review it for placement into our studio library, and so that we also have a floating copy available for show preparation off-site by any deejay who requests it.
Additional copies may also be used for on-air give-aways or membership drive premiums.
