As a youth in Chicago, Fred Anderson chanced to pick up a saxophone and found his life's calling. He had few lessons, which may explain how he forged his original style. Unknown until he co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the mid-1960s, Anderson performed regularly with trumpet man Billy Brimfield, and first recorded in 1966 with another associate, Joseph Jarman. Anderson played the opening night of the 1st Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979; and a few years later found himself owning and operating the Velvet Lounge, where he mentored and presented dozens of younger musicians.

“As tenor saxophonist, he invented a rugged, craggy musical language that influenced generations of ‘free jazz’ improvisers.”
-- Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

“His own music was very strange and beautiful, like nothing else . . . That’s why so many musicians hung around Fred. They wanted to figure out what he was doing and how they could learn from it.”
-- Joseph Jarman
