Today, we heard songs about spirits, not the angelic visionary type, but the rot-gut whiskey type. Giving up drinking and smoking for Lent, I've decided to play songs about the drunkard's lot and his corn liquor libations.

2. The Drunkard's Hell--The Stanley Brothers
3. Backslider's Plea--The Swan Silvertones

I just played "Evil" by James Brown and the Famous Flames, kicking off today's show about the evil wiles of the woman. Most gospel songs talk about salvation and the deliverance from evil, but on this April Fool's Day, we won't be hearing songs about miracles, but about black magic and the snares of seduction. April Fool's is the day of the trickster and one of the most archetypal trickster figures is the temptress, hence the term "turning tricks." The story goes back to Garden of Eden and extends to present day with the femme fatale of hard-boiled crime fiction. She is the mythological siren, the Helen of Troy, the Cleopatra of ancient history, and the Eve of our sexual consciousness. I'd like to dedicate this show to my friend Amy Golightly and all the devil women of the world.

1. Evil--James Brown
2. Atom And Evil--The Golden Gate Quartet
3. Evil--Howlin' Wolf
4. Forbidden Fruit--Nina Simone
5. Evil Hearted Woman--T-Bone Walker
6. Christine's Tune (Devil In Disguise)--Gram Parsons
7. Evil Gal Blues--Dinah Washington
8. Devil Woman--Marty Robbins
9. I'm Evil Tonight--Betty Harris
10. Devil Got My Woman--Skip James
