Special 90-minute Episode: MARY HOPKIN 60TH BIRTHDAY SPECIAL

Apple Records recording artist, Mary Hopkin, was a Paul McCartney protégé signed to the label and produced by the Beatle in 1968. Mary’s first single, Those Were the Days, replaced The Beatles’ own Hey Jude in the Number 1 slot in 1968. Hopkin released three Apple albums and many other rarer recordings over the years. We celebrate them all this week as Off the Beatle Path wishes Mary a happy sixtieth birthday on May 3, 2010!

Cry For a Shadow-The Beatles (theme song, Anthology 1 album, Capitol Records)

Those Were the Days-Mary Hopkin (Post Card album, Apple Records)

APPLE A DAY TRACK—a recorded gem from the Beatles’ own Apple label, which featured now-rare releases from a number of other artists, like these three tracks from Mary Hopkin’s Earth Song / Ocean Song album, produced by Tony Visconti

The Wind-Mary Hopkin (Earth Song / Ocean Song album, Apple Records)

Silver Birch and Weeping Willow-Mary Hopkin (Earth Song / Ocean Song album, Apple Records)

Martha-Mary Hopkin (Earth Song / Ocean Song album, Apple Records)

Three Mary Hopkin songs with even more direct Beatles connections

Goodbye-Mary Hopkin (written for Mary by Paul McCartney; Those Were the Days album, Apple Records)

If I Fell-Mary Hopkin (Live at the Royal Festival Hall 1972 album, Mary Hopkin Music)

The Game-Mary Hopkin (written for Mary by George Martin; Post Card album, Apple Records)

Mary’s contribution to a George Martin produced musical interpretation of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milkwood

Love Duet-Freddie Jones as Captain Cat and Mary Hopkin as Rosie Probert (Under Milkwood: A Play for Voices album, EMI Records)

Y Blodyn Gwyn-Mary Hopkin (Post Card album, Apple Records)

Lontano Degli occhi-Mary Hopkin (track arranged by Paul McCartney, Those Were the Days album, Apple Records)

WEEKLY RATIONALIZATION TRACK--Doesn’t truly “count” as Beatle-related, since it has no direct Beatle involvement and wasn’t written by a Beatle. Your program host Rush just rationalizes a way to include this very peripherally relevant song!

Rationalization:
Mary Hopkin shall forever be associated with the Beatles, given her time as an Apple recording artist and as a Paul McCartney protégé/discovery, though she did later record in many other musical contexts and settings. Accordingly, the remainder of tonight’s show consists of “weekly rationalizations,” each Hopkin track having no direct link to the Beatles’ musical world. Close enough, however, for your program host, who celebrates the entirety of Ms. Hopkin’s career--and you’re welcome!

Hold Me-Oasis (Oasis album, WEA Records)

Pie Jesu-Mary Hopkin (Spirit album, Trax Music)

Coca Cola commercial featuring Mary Hopkin

After Rain-Ralph McTell with Mary Hopkin (Sand in Your Shoes album, Transatlantic Records)

A quick diversion to celebrate another birthday, as Willie Nelson turned 77 today! He has recorded several Beatles tunes over the years, including this one with Merle Haggard

Yesterday-Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard (Seashores of Old Mexico album, Columbia Records)

Rachel’s Song-Vangelis with Mary Hopkin (Blade Runner soundtrack album, Atlantic Records)

If You Love Me-Mary Hopkin (Now and Then album, Mary Hopkin Music)

Life Begins Again-Mary Hopkin (song written by Mary Hopkin, Valentine album, Mary Hopkin Music)

Background music beds for announcer voice-overs this week from Elena Duran (flute) and Stephane Grappelli (violin) from their Yesterday: A Recollection of the Beatles album (RCA Records):

So, wow, we said goodbye today to BOTH Celtic Storm AND Everlasting Ghettoblaster. One very long-time KOOP institution and one more short term, but no less fantastic show. Well, it's the nature of life, right? Change.

So, I dedicated my first couple of tunes to Donnelle and her show, of 14 years!, Celtic Storm. She hopes to return...as does Ix of Everlasting Ghettoblaster. Wishing them well and we'll miss them both.

BUT, next week, new, fresh KOOP voices will be filling their time slots. So, stay tuned and be prepared to continue to be entertained, informed, and enriched by wonderful music and knowledge.

What's a Girl to Do will continue in the same time, same station. Hope you can continue to listen in.
