On May 5, 1862 the undermanned Mexican army defeated the occupying French forces at the Battle of Puebla. Although the victory was short-lived in the longer war, it was still a significant moral victory for the resistance movement. It also was the last time that a European military force has invaded the Americas. It has also been argued that without the victory at Puebla, the French may have supported the Confederacy in the American Civil War, possibly altering the outcome of that war.
