About KOOP

What is KOOP?

KOOP (pronounced koh-op) is a community radio station in Austin, TX, owned and operated by its members in a cooperative structure depending primarily upon its volunteers and supporters for all operations of the station. KOOP provides a diverse array of programming, emphasizing programs that deal with local issues and/or serve communities which are under-served by the mainstream media.

KOOP has more than 60 unique, locally-produced programs airing every week. Each of these programs is produced by an individual or by a collective of members. Any member of the community can join our organization and apply to produce a radio program — and KOOP provides the facilities and the training.

KOOP's Mission

KOOP's Mission "to provide high quality, innovative, and diverse community- oriented programming to Austin with an emphasis on those communities that are ignored or underserved by mainstream media; including serving and promoting specific communities of African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Chicanas/os, elders, gays, lesbians, homeless, immigrants, Indigenous peoples, Latinos/as, peoples with disabilities, women, working and poor people, youth, and other underserved communities. KOOP Community Radio supports the struggle for social justice and peace. KOOP Community Radio will operate with a high level of participation and accountability to the communities being served."

KOOP shares the 91.7 frequency with KVRX the University of Texas student radio station. KOOP broadcasts Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 7:00 pm (CT), and weekends from 9:00 am - 10:00 pm. KOOP also has internet-only programming on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays until 11:00 p.m. When we're not on the air, KVRX takes over. So, it's KOOP during the day and KVRX at night.
