Now Playing on KOOP: Guitar Picks - Mondays at 7:00pm
Down-home Southern Soul from the heyday of Memphis, Nashville. & Muscle Shoals
The show focuses on Southern Soul of the '60s and early '70s, before black music became a strictly urban format. Core artists include Joe Tex, Joe Simon, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, etc. In addition to the great vocalists, the show hopes to spotlight the great house bands at American Sound Studios, Stax, Hi, FAME, & Muscle Shoals Sound. Other performers of interest include white southerners writing soulful songs mixing Country/Soul/Rock. Examples include Joe South, Tony Joe White, & Bobbie Gentry. Show heroes include Dan Penn, Chips Moman, Arthur Alexander, Shelby Singleton, Steve Cropper, and Rick Hall.

Thanks to everyone who made a pledge this morning and helped us achieve our goal for the show! Thanks to Piper LeMoine for helping out. You will have another opportunity next week to show your support for Southern Soul.
Happy Valentine's Day, regardless of your relationship status. I tried to touch on them all a bit today. Please send requests, questions, & comments to [email protected] ...
Happy Birthday to King Curtis, Ft. Worth native, sax-man extraordinaire, & 2006 Rock'n'roll hall of fame inductee. He died tragically in 1971 at age 37.
Happy 85th birthday to Rick Hall, owner/founder of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Al. He launched the careers of many musicians, singers, songwriters, & recording engineers. Definitely one of the "Mount Rushmore" figures of Southern Soul.
