Imaginary Landscapes
with: Rick Kendrick
Monday 21:00:00 - 23:00:00
Internet Only

This program presents cutting-edge music by composers who have emerged from (or rebelled against) the Classical tradition over the last century. The focus is on iconoclasts and innovators; those whom the mainstream media, including Classical radio, typically neglect. The emphasis is on the most recent decades, but some programs feature the musical pioneers who cleared the paths for those who followed. Comments or suggestions are welcome. Contact Imaginary Landscapes.

Rick also co-hosts The Cutting Edge, a program of adventurous jazz and improvised music.

Takemitsu (1930-1996) was initially influenced by Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen. He co-founded the Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop) with Mayuzumi and others in 1951, initially rejecting Japanese music and culture. After experimenting with electronic music in the 1950s, he heard the music of John Cage. This had a tremendous effect on Takemitsu, and he began using indeterminacy and incorporating traditional Eastern music into his own. In the mid-60s, he co-founded Orchestral Space with fellow composer Ichiyanagi Toshi and conductor Ozawa Seiji.
