The Cutting Edge
with: Rick Kendrick and Clifford Allen
Sunday 19:00:00 - 20:30:00

This program presents adventurous jazz and improvised music featuring the musicians and innovations that have emerged (or are emerging) from the jazz tradition. It showcases work that recognizes these roots but looks forward. Not only can the great innovators and soloists of the present be heard, but also those who influenced them or have shown the promise to move beyond. Comments? Contact The Cutting Edge.

Rick has been listening to jazz for more than 35 years. His photographs of several jazz giants, taken in various Chicago locations in the late 1970s, can be seen in the online magazine monk mink pink punk. Rick also presents cutting-edge music that has arisen from the Classical "tradition" on Imaginary Landscapes, an Internet-only program.

Clifford has written about jazz since his college days and in addition to his blog Ni Kantu, writings have appeared in Signal To Noise, Paris Transatlantic, Tiny Mix Tapes, All About Jazz, The New York City Jazz Record, One Final Note, Line Magazine, The City Pages (Minneapolis), and the Austinist. He has also penned liner notes for ESP-Disk', FMP, Porter Records, No Business Records, Clean Feed and other labels.

Booker Ervin was one of the great tenor saxophonists of the 1960s, but is little remembered today. Born in Denison, Texas, in 1930, he switched from trombone to tenor while in the USAF in the early 1950s. He performed and recorded frequently (at least 8 LPs) with Charles Mingus during the late '50s and early '60s, and led his own groups throughout the latter decade. He also recorded with Horace Parlan, Mal Waldron, Andrew Hill, and Dexter Gordon (a major influence). Ervin left the USA in late 1964 for Europe, but continued to visit the States and record. He died of kidney disease in 1970 at the age of 39.
