July 26, 2019 marks the 29th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) give civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. Juneteenth, held this year on Wednesday, June 19th, is a state holiday in Texas and the oldest known continuous celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Slavery has been a part of Texas history as Tejas, a Mexican state, an independent republic, from1836-1845 and as the twenty-eighth US state before seceding as the seventh state to join the confederacy in 1861.

This June marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.  On June 28, 1969 there was a raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village.  Patrons were fed up with demeaning treatment by the police.  That night the oppressed crowd decided that they were not going to take any more and a riot erupted.   The events of that night led to the first gay pride parades in the US and elsewhere.  In June, 2016 President Obama established the area around the site as the Stonewall National Monument, the first LGBT National Park in the United States.  KOOP celebrates this momentous...
